Tonight was our 3rd outing in the Mining League this year. A beautiful evening saw a 10 man Methigion take on the youthful St Day. Many thanks go to our last minute stand in players – Easwaran Jr and Mike Williams.
We won the toss and batted first on a wicket that saw some interesting bounce (or lack of it). Methigion started at a relatively sedate pace with the scoring going along at about 5 per over from the first 10. After the third wicket fell, it was looking like Methigion had made a steady enough, if not electric, start, but then step forward Lockyer and Easwaran Sr. The boundaries flowed and the batting was made to look easy in a 100 partnership from 9.2 overs. Both eventually fell in the last over from consecutive balls, but by that stage the scoreboard showed 147 and Lockyer had made his career best total of 82 with Easwaran on 28.
One would have thought that a target of 150 would have been easy enough to defend therefore, but that would have been overlooking one vital point – this is Methigion! St Day’s opening bat anchored their innings well and scored 50 himself. The required rate of 7.5 was kept in touch and at one point it looked like we may be about to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory but thanks to some tight bowling from Haines (2-6 from 4) it came down to a final over equation of needing 16 runs from 6 balls. St Day got tantalisingly close but eventually Methigion were victorious by 5 runs.
Overall a really close match with a second league win for Methigion. Who needs Sky Sports when you have entertainment like that!
