After driving Hail during the trip to Perranporth, my arrival was greeted by sunshine and at least 8 Methigion players warming up wearing white clothes- some even had identical gleaming boots. You could be excused for an air of optimism for our 1st match.
Unfortunately my first(of several) tactical error was to allow the juniors to bat first- they claimed they were short but I’m sure some of them were hiding in the hedge. They made 107-3 despite economical bowling from Adams on debut 4-0-17 and Dinuka 3-1-8. Gripper bowled the only maiden of the match but unfortunately we leaked a fair few runs particularly to Cunliffe-30 not out and Day-21. A few dropped catches but otherwise it did resemble cricket and we felt we were in with a shout of chasing with the game shortened to 18 overs each.
However the temperatures dropped, the sun sank straight into our eyes, RVL locum gave most of us out and we came up short at 84-6. This was despite an excellent 31 not out from Ed supported by 12 from RVL locum and an excellent 22 extras.
Plenty to cheer- many thanks to the juniors for supplying the BBQ and Dinuka/Ed and Bill for cooking. Roll on the re-match on 16th July.
